New Tour: Foz, Swimsuit Edition
How Porto discovered the sea For centuries, Porto turned its back on the Atlantic. The sea was a place of fishermen, storms and shipwrecks—admired, perhaps, but rarely enjoyed. Then, in the nineteenth century, everything changed. Doctors prescribed sea bathing. Railway connections made the coast accessible. The city's wealthier families began building elegant villas by the shore, and what had once been a windswept fringe of Porto slowly became its most fashionable summer destination. A day at the beach became a ritual; a season by the sea, a social statement. On this walk, we'll trace the remarkable story of how Foz Velha and Foz Nova became Portugal's bathing capital, where striped tents, bathing machines, grand cafés and seaside promenades shaped an entirely new way of living. We'll discover how a simple medical recommendation evolved into a culture of leisure that transformed architecture, urban planning and the very rhythm of the city. Along Avenida do Brasil and Montevideu we'll read the layers of this extraordinary landscape: from fishermen's cottages to Belle Époque villas, from Art Deco apartments to Modernist icons, from humble beaches to one of Porto's most coveted neighbourhoods. The Atlantic is never merely scenery here—it is the force that moulded the district, influenced its architecture and gave Porto one of its most distinctive identities. Because understanding Foz is understanding how Porto learned not only to live by the river, but also to embrace the ocean. And for those who have joined us before, welcome back: this is already our fourth journey through Foz. Each walk explores a different chapter of its story, proving that this small corner of Porto contains enough history, architecture and human stories to be rediscovered time and time again.
