Summer Series No.6a - Hannah Arendt on Truth in Politics

Wed 5 Aug · 5:30pm · 1.21 Paterson's Land

Hannah Arendt — Truth and Politics Wed 5 August Stung by the bad faith & misrepresentation that she endured after the publication of Eichmann in Jerusalem, Hannah Arendt wrote this essay for the New Yorker in 1967. She asks why truthfulness has never been counted as a political virtue, and why truth-telling and politics seem on bad terms. When lying seems politically expedient, what's our obligation towards the truth? Who are we? We're a reading group that welcomes all - young, old, completely new to philosophy or well versed, from keen students to those who've never darkened the door of a lecture room. We read both long & short texts, but you don't need to join at the very start of our longer reads - you can come along at any stage of the journey. Our conversations are lively, wide-ranging & respectful. We usually head to the pub to continue the discussion after our meetings.
