Through the Gates of Hell they came... It's August and this summer has been Hot as Hell, so let's discuss some horror movies about Gateways to Hell itself. The Hellgate Mythos is a popular cosmic horror subgenre where a specific geographic location, building, or ancient relic acts as a physical portal connecting Earth directly to Hell. They can be found in such places as churches, hospitals, apartment buildings, outer space, or even your own backyard. Unlike traditional ghost stories centered on personal hauntings, Gates of Hell movies operate on an apocalyptic scale. The primary dread comes from the idea that once a gateway is breached, the laws of reality, time, and physics break down entirely, threatening the whole world. So, let's throw these gates wide open and watch as, literally, all Hell breaks loose! It is worth noting that The Beyond is the second film of the "Gates of Hell" trilogy by Lucio Fulci. The other films are City of the Living Dead (1980) and The House by the Cemetery (1981). Each film in the trilogy is narratively independent, so you don't need to see the others to make sense of The Beyond (if you can make sense of it anyway). I mention them though, because they all focus on the Gates of Hell theme. So, if you're looking for more of the same, then I recommend seeking them out. Oh, and I included Event Horizon in honor of Sam Neill; may he rest in peace.
