Summer Series No.7 - The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath

Wed 19 Aug · 5:30pm · 1.21 Paterson's Land

Sylvia Plath — The Bell Jar Wed 19 August First of two sessions on Plath's only novel - published under a pseudonym in 1963 shortly before her death. A gifted young woman takes up an internship at a New York magazine, but feels suffocated by expectation and descends into breakdown. A detached, precise, even funny account of one's own mind coming apart. This one probably deserves a content warning for themes around mental illness, suicidal ideation & psychiatric treatment. Room number is provisional for now! Will update this listing if necessary when we have the next set of bookings confirmed. Who are we? We're a reading group that welcomes all - young, old, completely new to philosophy or well versed, from keen students to those who've never darkened the door of a lecture room. We read both long & short texts, but you don't need to join at the very start of our longer reads - you can come along at any stage of the journey. Our conversations are lively, wide-ranging & respectful. We usually head to the pub to continue the discussion after our meetings.
