Big Schloss: A 12-Mile Hike You Can Do
Located on a mountain crest along the VA/WV border, the dramatic Big Schloss outcrop offers a scenic panorama of the surrounding area. For hikers used to the 7- or 8-mile hikes that Adventuring often hosts, this 12-mile circuit with 2,300 feet of elevation gain is a comfortable step up. Much of the uphill parts are gradual and the final steep climb to the top is relatively short. The trail for our descent is steep and rocky, a good stretch for hiking poles. We'll meet to form our carpool at 8:15 a.m. at the Kiss & Ride lot of the East Falls Church Metro Station at North Sycamore and 19th Streets, to your right as you leave the station's only exit. We plan to leave at 8:30 a.m. sharp. Bring plenty of beverages, lunch, sturdy hiking boots, bug spray, and the $5 Adventuring fee, plus $20 to reimburse your carpool driver if you're a passenger. We’ll make stop at the Sheetz in Haymarket on our way to the trailhead. There some nearby options for an optional dinner afterwards. NEW! Please click here to review our release form.
