Slow Shutter: Control, Chaos & Everything Between

What if the best shot you take isn’t the one you carefully composed, but the one where you threw out the rulebook entirely? A slow shutter speed is one of the most versatile tools in photography depending on how you use it — you can freeze a story in streaks of light, dissolve a busy scene into something painterly, or create images that look nothing like what your eye actually saw. What we’ll explore: Intentional Camera Movement — ICM — takes that idea to its logical extreme. Move the camera deliberately during a long exposure and the world dissolves into something painterly and abstract. This is the chaos end of the dial. The same slow shutter speeds that make ICM possible open up a whole range of other techniques worth exploring. And there’s a reason to revisit them: some modern camera systems can now compensate for camera shake at shutter speeds as low as one second. One second! I’d spent years treating 1/60th as the floor and 1/50th as a risk worth taking on a good day. It changes what’s possible — and it’s worth finding out what your specific kit can actually do. For instance: Slow shutter — let movement in the scene register as blur while you hold the camera steady. With modern in-body stabilisation, you can push this further than you might expect. Panning — the control end of the spectrum. Track a moving subject and let the background dissolve into streaks of colour and light. The subject stays sharp; the world around it does not. Particularly well suited to smartphone shooters. ND filters — in bright conditions, a neutral density filter cuts the light and lets you hold slow speeds without blowing the exposure. Essential if you want shallow depth of field alongside motion blur in daylight. Inside, the galleries and shopping malls offer something quieter: the location gives us flexibility whatever the weather brings.
