Driving to events in Essex

Gigs, matches and nights out across Southend, Chelmsford, Colchester, Basildon and Brentwood — done by car, which is how most of them get done. Where to leave it, what the drive home is like, and who to ring when it lets you down.

Where the nights are

The Essex towns with the most going on

Five towns, five quite different evenings. Worth knowing which one you are driving into before you pick where to park.

Southend-on-Sea

A seafront town, so the evening clusters along the front and in the streets behind it. It is the one Essex night out that is genuinely weather-dependent: a warm Friday changes the whole character of the place, and the crowd goes up with it.

Chelmsford

The county's city and the most conventional of the five — a compact centre you can cross on foot, so one car park does the whole night rather than one per stop.

Colchester

Older, and quieter in feel until term time, when the student crowd arrives and the going-out concentrates into a small number of streets.

Basildon

Less a centre than a set of destinations. The nights out here tend to be somewhere you drive to deliberately rather than somewhere you wander into, which makes the car part of the plan instead of an afterthought.

Brentwood

Small, and a short high street does most of the work — which is its advantage. You park once and walk the rest.

The practical bit

Parking and the drive

Three things that are true most of the time, and none of which are a car park recommendation — prices and restrictions change faster than a page like this does.

Southend seafront parking fills up on a warm evening, and it fills up earlier than people expect. The usual trade is to park back from the front and walk down, which is five minutes you would spend circling anyway.

Chelmsford city centre is mostly paid multi-storey rather than on-street, so the question is less where to park than when the barrier stops letting cars out. Check the closing time before the last round, not after it.

A lot of the best Essex venues are not in a town at all, and the drive home from those is unlit single-track lanes. That is fine when everything works and genuinely unpleasant when it does not, which is the honest argument for knowing who you would ring before you need to.

The commonest one

When the car will not start afterwards

It is late, the car park is emptying, and turning the key does nothing. Nine times in ten this is the battery rather than anything serious.

Interior lights left on, a short cold drive there, a battery that was already four winters old — a long evening parked up is exactly when a tired one gives out. It is also the cheapest problem on this page to fix, and it is fixed where the car stands rather than by moving the car anywhere.

Prime Automotive Shoeburyness LTD run that as a callout: based in Shoeburyness, open 24 hours, fixed price, cash or card, and the number is 07455 560506. Their page for it is Flat battery callout in Essex.

When it is not the battery

Getting the car home

Some cars are not going to start again tonight. At that point the job is not a repair, it is a lift — for you and for the car.

Recovery is the thing worth arranging before you start trying to arrange anything else, because it decides the rest of the night: where the car ends up, whether you are waiting with it, and whether you get home at all. Car recovery across Essex is the same operator as the callout above, with a page per town.

The middle case

Fixing it where it sits

Between “it starts” and “it needs a truck” there is a large middle: the thing that needs an hour and a part, not a workshop and three days. Getting that done in the car park you are standing in is quicker than booking the car in, and it means you are not coming back for it on a weekday. Mobile mechanic in Essex is the page for that.

If it is a VW-group car

Audi, VW, Seat, Skoda

A marque specialist is worth a detour for the boring reason that they have seen your fault before. Prime Automotive are Audi and VAG group specialists, which covers a good share of what is parked in Essex.

For servicing and repair, that is Audi specialist in Essex. For the part itself, they also sell second-hand Audi and VAG parts — VAG parts in Essex — which is often the difference between a repair that makes sense on an older car and one that does not.

The last case

When it is not worth fixing

Sometimes the quote is more than the car. That is not a failure, it is just the end of that car, and the useful thing then is for it to leave the drive quickly rather than sit there for a month.

Prime Automotive collect scrap cars across Essex free of charge, the same day, and pay on collection: Scrap cars in Essex, or go straight to the Scrap quote form. If the next thing is a replacement rather than a bus pass, they also source cars — Car sourcing in Essex.

And the actual point

What is on in Essex this week

All of the above is in service of the evening, not the other way round. Palaner reads what is genuinely on near a place this week — gigs, club nights, comedy, sport, the small things that never make a listings magazine — and ranks it against what you are actually into. Southend, or London when the night is worth the drive in.

Questions

Three things people ask

Who recovers a car in Southend at night?

Prime Automotive Shoeburyness LTD are based in Shoeburyness and are open 24 hours a day, covering car recovery across Essex — including Southend-on-Sea, Chelmsford, Colchester, Basildon and Brentwood. Pricing is fixed, and they take cash or card.

Can a flat battery be sorted where the car is parked?

That is what a flat-battery callout is for: somebody comes to the car rather than the car being dragged to a garage. Prime Automotive run it as a 24-hour callout across Essex at a fixed price.

What if the car is not worth repairing?

Then it is a scrap job rather than a repair one. Prime Automotive collect scrap cars across Essex free of charge on the same day and pay on collection, and they also source replacement cars.
