Mahabhoj

Written by Mannu Bhandari, Mahabhoj (1979) is a powerful political novel that exposes the dark nexus between corrupt politicians, bureaucrats, and criminal elements in contemporary India. The story centers on the suspicious death of Bisu, a vocal Dalit youth and activist fighting against upper-caste exploitation, whose tragic demise becomes a focal point of intense political maneuvering. Instead of pursuing genuine justice, self-serving politicians across party lines treat the incident as an opportunity a literal "mahabhoj" or grand feast to manipulate public sentiment, suppress vital evidence, and secure votes for upcoming elections. Ultimately, the novel serves as a scathing satire on the decay of democratic values, vividly illustrating how marginalized individuals are treated as mere pawns devoured by political vultures while the oppressive system remains entirely unchanged
