VINYL PLAYBACK: GOLDIE — TIMELESS

For the next Vinyl Playback session at 26 Curtain Road, Shoreditch, we turn to one of the defining albums of 1990s British electronic music — Goldie’s Timeless.

Released in 1995, Timeless arrived at a pivotal moment for jungle and drum & bass. Goldie took the rapid breakbeats, heavy sub-bass and darker atmosphere of the emerging scene and expanded them into something far more ambitious, bringing together electronic production, orchestral textures and powerful vocals. At the heart of the album is “Inner City Life”, featuring the extraordinary vocals of Diane Charlemagne, alongside the epic 22-minute title track “Timeless”. The record moves between intricate breakbeats, deep bass pressure, atmospheric passages and sweeping orchestration, giving the album a scale that was unusual for dance music at the time. Goldie was also a central figure in the Metalheadz movement, the influential label he co-founded with Kemistry and Storm in 1994. Their Sunday sessions at the Blue Note in Hoxton became an important part of London's emerging drum & bass culture. The Guardian

For Vinyl Playback, we'll give Timeless the space it deserves — played from start to finish on the hi-fi, allowing the detail, dynamics and extraordinary production of the album to unfold as one complete piece.
