New Kin: An Ecofantasy | Art | Ballard Estate

Discover speculative worlds and future ecologies.NEW KIN marks the first public presentation of artist Chaitra Nayak’s practice, bringing together a collection of paintings developed over two years.Working in acrylic and ink, Chaitra builds speculative worlds through slow layers of observation, underpainting and reworking. Her practice, which she describes as ecofantasy, imagines ecosystems where hybrid creatures, plants and other forms coexist and negotiate space and resources. Recurring objects such as pearls and orbs become shared resources on which these imagined worlds depend, inviting us to consider our relationship with nature.Having spent over a decade working in sustainable finance, Chaitra brings a longstanding engagement with climate, ecology and systems to her artistic practice. NEW KIN introduces the visual language of this emerging body of work. Join us for an evening with the paintings and step into a world where familiar boundaries between the natural, the imagined and the possible begin to shift.
