An NCPA Presentation
Supported by Citi
A symphony orchestra is a large-scale musical ensemble consisting of 60 to over 100 musicians organised into four instrument sections: strings, woodwinds, brass and percussions. The assemblage of instruments is a well-thought-out process and not a random ragtag collection of instruments. Contrary to the popular belief, instruments like the piano and the guitar are not a part of the orchestra although many concerti (pieces for soloists and orchestra) have been written for piano, guitar and even sitar soloists. Though the symphony orchestra is primarily associated with the western classical music, today, it is also used in Hollywood blockbusters.
The workshop will focus on the evolution of symphonic orchestra. It will elucidate that the secret to compose for the orchestra lies in treating the orchestra, not as a mere ensemble of instruments but as one gigantic instrument capable of evoking all moods ranging from extreme gentleness to uncompromising thunder. Interspersed with musical examples, the presentation is designed to offer insight into the concept and working of symphonic orchestration, especially for the practitioners of Indian music, which is essentially a solo tradition.
Qualified with a master’s degree in mathematics, and doctorate in music composition from the State University of New York at Buffalo, Kedarnath Awati is a practitioner, educator and writer in the field of Western music. He has also trained in Hindustani vocal music. His main area of work has been to arrange and compose western classical music, also for films and private projects. Even after his retirement as the Dean of the Faculty of Film, FTII, he has remained closely associated with the teaching of the music courses conducted by the FTII and the National Film Archives of India.
