Johannesburg becomes one enormous creative showcase when Design Week South Africa returns with exhibitions, studio visits, workshops, panel discussions, product launches, installations, retail experiences, and guided tours across the city.Rather than taking place inside one convention centre, the four-day festival unfolds across studios, galleries, shops, showrooms, and cultural spaces in Braamfontein and the CBD, Kramerville and the northern suburbs, Rosebank and surrounds, and the Parks. Visitors can build their own route through the programme, moving between neighbourhoods and choosing the events that interest them most. The 2026 theme, The Shape of Us, explores the ways heritage, identity, history, and future-focused ideas shape contemporary South African design. The programme spans furniture, ceramics, textiles, fashion, architecture, interiors, product design, art, urbanism, sound, and creative craftsmanship.Highlights include open studios and exhibitions from Bumba Souled Ceramics, Soulana Studios, LOURO, NOMBIDA, The Art Vanguard SA, and other local creatives. Visitors can also join a guided tour of the REVERSE FUTURES exhibition at the Joburg Contemporary Art Foundation, explore texture and material design with Cemcrete, attend an afternoon of clay at the Kim Sacks School of Ceramics, and hear Young Urbanists unpack why Sandton can be so difficult to navigate on foot.Nighttime programming adds a more experimental edge, with the Groove Biennale installation and performance programme bringing together architecture, sound, live performance, and Johannesburg’s alternative nightlife culture. Many activations are free and open to the public, although advance registration may be required. Certain workshops, tours, and discussions have limited capacity, while selected events are ticketed or invitation-only. Visitors should consult the individual programme entries before arriving.Date: Thursday, 8 October to Sunday, 11 October 2026Preview event: Selected programming begins on Wednesday, 7 OctoberVenues: Various studios, galleries, showrooms, retailers, and cultural spaces across JohannesburgTheme: The Shape of UsCost: Varies by activation; many events are free, but registration may be requiredProgramme and bookings: Explore the official activation programmeMore information: Visit Design Week South Africa
