Reclaiming Space: Stamp Your Story: Art, Identity, & Indigenous Design

In celebration of Latino Heritage Month workshop introduces participants to pre-Cuauhtémoc sellos—stamp-based visual systems rooted in pre-Columbian Mesoamerican artistic traditions—through the contemporary practice of Chicago-based artist Eldritch Cruz. Grounded in Indigenous knowledge systems, the session explores how symbolic mark-making, repetition, and pattern function as forms of cultural memory, resistance, and storytelling. Participants will engage in a hands-on process of designing and creating their own sellos (stamps), reflecting on identity, diaspora, and self-representation. Through guided discussion and making, the workshop bridges ancestral visual languages with contemporary artistic practice, inviting students to explore how art can serve as a tool for cultural affirmation, decolonial thinking, and community connection. No prior art experience is required. All materials will be provided.
