Islam, Art, and Cultural Imagination explores how Muslims have imagined, interpreted, and expressed Islam across different cultural and intellectual contexts.
The program will feature Dr. Naoki Yamamoto, whose work engages questions of Islam, Japanese culture, artistic expression, and the development of Islamic traditions outside the geographical and cultural centers most commonly associated with Islam.
Rather than treating these traditions as curiosities, the conversation will ask what they can contribute to how we understand knowledge, spirituality, creativity, and cultural imagination. While the conversation will center around Islam, it will hopefully be relevant for all students in learning about new cultures, and how we can approach other traditions in a way that transforms us, rather than as outsiders looking in.
