Closed-loop neurotechnologies to restore function after neurological injury
My research focuses on developing closed-loop neurotechnologies that use real-time signals to guide stimulation and improve function after neurological injury, such as stroke and spinal cord injury. In this talk, I will first present work showing how wearable high-density electromyography (EMG) can be used to characterize impaired motor control, decode movement intent, and control functional electrical stimulation (FES) to assist hand and arm movements. I will discuss the development of these systems and recent results from our clinical trials. I will then describe how my lab at UT Dallas is extending these approaches to closed-loop vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), pairing precisely timed VNS with movement to support therapeutic plasticity. Ongoing work focuses on identifying movement patterns to selectively reinforce, developing physiological biomarkers of the response to VNS, and automating therapy for use outside the clinic. Together, this work explores how real-time information about behavior and physiology can be used to guide neurostimulation therapies to promote recovery.
