Christopher Confessore leads the Alabama Symphony Orchestra in two distinctly American works. Copland’s Appalachian Spring has come to sound like the American landscape itself — open and unhurried, rooted in Shaker melody. Howard Hanson’s Second Symphony, the “Romantic,” closes the morning program with an emotional directness that was quietly radical for its time.
