About the Race and Education Lecture Series
The annual Race and Education Lecture Series supports Colgate University’s mission and strategic plan by examining the connections between race and educational processes and institutions from both contemporary and historical perspectives. The series engages the Colgate community in understanding the importance of racial and ethnic diversity in educational curricula and brings the community together to critically discuss issues of race and racism and their impact on education and the broader society.

The Race and Education Lecture Series is rooted in Colgate’s recent history and its ongoing responsibility to address issues of access to education and the extent to which race and ethnicity continue to shape access and opportunity. This history is notably public: an anti-immigrant statement made by former Colgate President George B. Cutten in 1923 is on display at the Ellis Island Immigration Museum and reflects racist views about the immigrants entering the United States at the turn of the 20th century.

The Race and Education Lecture Series was initiated in 2001 following student protests over the naming of a Colgate building for former President Cutten. In response to these protests, the annual lecture series was established to continue a dialogue about race on campus. The Department of Educational Studies was asked to host the lecture series.
