St. John’s Folklife would like to cordially invite you to our first Contra Dances of the year! We will be hosting a dance on Saturday, October 17 for Johnnie Family Weekend, from 8-11 p.m. in the Great Hall.

There will also be an informal dance on Saturday, October 10 during Long Weekend for people looking for something fun to do, and to learn more about the style of dance.

What is it? Contra dancing is a type of called and partnered folk dance, a lot like square or line dancing. It's very beginner friendly, there's no required footwork, and all moves are taught in real time by the caller who guides the dance. So, if you're nervous about social dancing, this is a great way to put a toe in the water. Both dances will be called by our very own Ned Gaudry, with music provided by our house band led by Jamie Graff. Refreshments will be provided during the Family Weekend dance.

If you like high energy, approachable, and enjoyable dancing and music then this is the event for you!
