Winner of Special Jury Mention for New Documentary Director at the 2025 Tribeca Festival - Rowan Haber Thirty years after Saturday Night Live turned the androgynous character Pat into pop-culture punchline, director Rowan Haber explores the complicated legacy of the controversial character. Rather than simply dismissing or celebrating the original sketches, WE ARE PAT brings together a cohort of trans and nonbinary comedians alongside Pat creator Julia Sweeney to unpack 1990s media representation and 2020s trans reclamation. Who, as the comedians ask one another, gets to define the joke? The screening will be followed by a conversation with the director Rowan Haber. About the Filmmaker Rowan Haber is a writer and a director with an MFA from NYU. They were selected for labs by Sundance, Universal Pictures, AFI, Film Independent, Gotham and Outfest. They have been written up in Indiewire, Hollywood Reporter, Rolling Stone, and The New Yorker. Their work has been supported by the MacArthur Foundation, the Ford Foundation, SFFILM, Sundance, Tribeca and many others. They won Webby, New Orleans Film Festival, and LA Film Festival awards for their series, New Deep South and Best New Documentary Director Jury Mention at Tribeca for their most recent film We Are Pat (2025), executive produced by Alan Cumming and Lilly Wachowski. They are attached to direct the adaptation of Brontez Purnell’s novel Since I Laid My Burden Down (2021 SFFILM Rainin Grant). Their TV work can be seen on FX’s Pride.
