"Common Misperceptions of Liberian History", with Tim Nevin, Independent Researcher and Historian of Liberia.

The small West African country of Liberia has been a nation since 1847, but the history of the region stretches back much further in time. This presentation seeks to address some misconceptions about Liberian history from various perspectives including topics such as the American Colonization Society, the Liberia-US special relationship during WW2, Firestone Rubber plantations, the Liberian Civil War and the recent Ebola pandemic.

Dr. Timothy Nevin earned his BA (1996) and MA (2000) in History at the University of Illinois in Chicago (UIC). Subsequently, he went on to complete his Ph.D. at the University of Florida (2010) under the tutelage of Dr. Luise White. Dr. Nevin taught Liberian history, African history and World history at two universities in Liberia: William V.S. Tubman University (Harper) and Cuttington University (Suakoko) in addition to teaching at Old Dominion University (Norfolk, VA). He has lived in Ghana, Senegal and Liberia, and is the author of numerous peer reviewed journal articles on various topics within Liberian history. He currently lives and works in Columbus, Ohio.

The CIS Thursday Forum is a weekly series focusing on international research, scholarship and creative activity for the OHIO community.
