Hogarth Symposium: His Art, Life, and Times

October 14-16, 2026 Hogarth Symposium: His Art, Life, and Times This three-day symposium is presented by the Lewis Walpole Library in collaboration with the Yale Center for British Art, Yale Library, and Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library. It celebrates the generous gift by Professor Ronald Paulson (1930–2024) of his papers together with a legacy endowment to establish a fellowship at the Lewis Walpole Library in memory of his son, Andrew Meredith Paulson. Speakers will present creative new research in Hogarth studies across multidisciplinary perspectives. Panel themes include “Paulson’s Hogarth” on day one of the symposium; “Drawing” on day two; and “Nation and Empire” and “Social and Political Critique” on day three. Additional programming during breakout sessions includes screenings of selected films about William Hogarth’s life, art, and times; study room visits and gallery tours (with advance sign-up). The exhibition Satire, Sympathy, and Social Critique: William Hogarth’s Progress Prints is on view at Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library from Oct. 12, 2026, through May 30, 2027. The opening reception will be held on Monday, Nov. 12.
