Professor Kimberly Cassibry, associate professor of art at Wellesley College is an art and architectural historian specializing in the aincient Mediterranean. Cassibry will prsent the guest lecture "Tricky Triumphal Arches: A Romany Legacy for the Modern World." This lecture is presented by the Elizabeth Allen Visiting Scholars in Art History Series, and is free and open to the public.
Triumphal arches have been in the news lately, as journalists scramble to explain the colossal monument planned for Washington, D.C. This talk demystifies triumphal arches, shows where to look for hidden meanings, and explores how communities have reshaped controversial ones. Italy's mania for triumphal arches in the 1920s and 1930s offers a cautionary tale.
