Find Your Scholarly Community: Basic Searching to Identify Research Questions

Kickstart your research journey by learning how to turn a fuzzy idea into a sharp, answerable question. Drop in to practice breaking down topics into categories and search terms, building effective search strings/queries, and identifying where to search for primary and secondary sources. You’ll leave with a clearer research question and a starter toolkit for finding your scholarly community.

This is a drop-in workshop (no registration required) and designed to guide you in acquiring/developing research skills necessary to move through different stages of the research cycle. Can be applied to projects ranging from course assignments to theses and dissertations. Open to current UC San Diego undergraduate and graduate students in Arts & Humanities and Social Sciences.

This is workshop 1 of a three part series.

Workshop 2: Conduct a Literature Review and Narrow Your Research QuestionsWorkshop 3: Design Your Research Project — Identify Kinds of Resources, Research Methods and Where to Go
