The Edges between Sarah Sze’s Paintings and Sculpture

Keely Orgeman, the Seymour H. Knox, Jr., Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, leads a discussion about the relationship between Sarah Sze’s sculpture-like paintings and painting-like sculpture. Beginning with the sculptural installation Images in Translation (2019), the Gallery Talk introduces the ideas, materials, and techniques that informed its creation at a time when the artist had concurrently renewed her practice of painting. Seven years later, Sze has extended her experimentation with image making in new paintings, conceived as conceptual and visual analogues to the earlier sculpture. Offered in conjunction with the exhibition Sarah Sze: Images in Translation. Gallery Talks is a weekly series led by Gallery staff and guest speakers on Wednesdays at midday. Each session focuses on one to three works from the collection, inviting participants to look closely, share observations, and engage in conversation in the galleries.
