About the Lecture

On the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, Dr. Scott Douglas Gerber examines how U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas became the nation’s leading voice on the relationship between America’s founding document and the Constitution. Drawing on Justice Thomas’s major civil rights opinions, Dr. Gerber reveals how the core principles of 1776 continue to shape today’s critical legal debates.

About the Speaker

Dr. Scott Douglas Gerber is Declaration of Independence Center Scholar at the University of Mississippi and a Fellow at the National Association of Scholars. He recently retired from a tenured law professorship. He has received multiple awards for all three parts of a professor’s job: teaching, scholarship, and service. StateStats.org named him one of the top law professors in Ohio; in 2022 he won the inaugural Christopher Collier Prize from the Connecticut Supreme Court Historical Society; and in 2026 he received a Florida Author and Publishers Association President’s Book Award. He has published six academic books — including the leading work on Justice Thomas’s jurisprudence — as well as forty-nine articles, thirty-nine book reviews, one hundred fifty-four op-eds, and thirty-six sundry pieces. He has also published five novels. He earned his PhD and JD from the University of Virginia, and his BA from the College of William and Mary. He is a member of the Colorado bar.
