Join Warren Wilson College for a Nielsen Big Idea Lecture featuring Ladelle McWhorter, Chair of Gender & Sexuality Studies at the University of Richmond.
In her talk, “What Does Homophobia Have to Do With Racism? Let’s Look at the History,” McWhorter will explore the historical connections between homophobia, racism, and systems of oppression. Drawing from her scholarship and decades of work in social justice, she will examine how these histories intersect and continue to shape our communities today.
McWhorter is the author of Bodies and Pleasures, Racism and Sexual Oppression in Anglo-America and Unbecoming Persons. She has worked for social justice for more than thirty years with Virginia Organizing, a grassroots organization dedicated to dismantling racism, fighting poverty and environmental injustice, and training ordinary Virginians to advocate for themselves and their communities.
