OTYC is delighted to present our winter mainstage: Engelbert Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel! Inspired by the Brothers Grimm fairy tale, Hansel and Gretel transforms the familiar story into a warm and magical opera about family, hope, and the love between two siblings. Humperdinck’s lush score combines sweeping Romantic writing with folk-inspired melodies, making this a wonderful introduction to opera for new audiences and a beloved favorite for longtime opera-goers.
Our production will take place December 4 and 5 in the Saybrook Underbrook. It will use a cut of the original score, arranged for a small chamber orchestra, with a cast of six singers:
Hansel — Mezzo-Soprano
Gretel — Soprano
The Witch — Tenor or Mezzo-Soprano
Mother — Mezzo-Soprano
Father — Baritone
Sandman/Dew Fairy — Soprano
