Where do we come from, and where do we go from here? Join the Boston College Symphony Orchestra for “Musical Source Codes” at New England Conservatory’s Jordan Hall on Sunday, November 1, 3 pm.
The performance features Jessie Montgomery’s meditative Source Code for string orchestra and Gustav Mahler’s monumental Symphony No. 5. As Montgomery traces gestures from Civil Rights-era dance, song, and poetry back to Black spirituals, Mahler grapples with his Austro-Germanic symphonic inheritance in an anxious age of cultural and technological transformation.
Both composers use music as a prism to reflect suffering and homage alongside hope and healing. As we face the rapid rise of generative artificial intelligence and struggle to safeguard what it means to be human together, experience a powerful program exploring the full challenge of the human condition – past, present, and future.
