Somewhere Else: Leila McConnell and Melinda Laszczynski, curated by Melissa L. Mednicov, features two artists who use abstraction to create meditative paintings that challenge art historical concepts of landscape and representation. McConnell, in her abstract paintings, creates ethereal and otherworldly glimpses which invite the viewer to stay and look. Her paintings offer the possibility, through her formal acumen, of momentary explorations of worlds seen and unseen. Laszczynski, through her adventurous exploitation of painting and mass culture’s debris such as paint skins, glitter, and lenticular and holographic materials, challenges (and exploits) the norms of formalism in painting, while also bringing the viewer towards new ways of seeing and being. Her lenticular and holographic materials transform the viewer’s relationship to the work and the space within which they behold it.
All exhibitions are open to the public with free admission during gallery hours. Receptions are subject to change.
