Hear directly from curator Hiroyuki Good about his exhibit, "From Noh to Kabuki: Reimagined Stories in Ukiyo-e"
During this talk, you will see original Ukiyo-e (Japanese woodblock prints) from Archives & Special Collections at the University of Pittsburgh Library System. These prints, created in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, depict both Noh and Kabuki plays. The Japanese theatre tradition of Noh emerged in the fourteenth century and was associated with the samurai elite. Kabuki theatre developed in the Edo period (1600 and 1868) as a form of popular theatre for a broader audience. See the representations of characters, themes, and theatrical expressions in Noh performances and how Kabuki reimagined and expanded these stories.
