Join the Center for Asian Studies, IFS, and the Alma Collective for a screening of the award-winning documentary Bangla Surf Girls, a powerful coming-of-age film that follows three teenage girls in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, as they pursue their dreams of becoming professional surfers. Against the backdrop of the world’s longest natural sea beach, the film explores the challenges the girls face as they navigate family expectations, gender norms, poverty, and the pressures of growing up in a rapidly changing society. Filmed over several years, the film offers an intimate portrait of resilience, friendship, and the pursuit of personal freedom. The documentary invites audiences to consider broader questions about gender, youth empowerment, globalization, and social change in contemporary South and Southeast Asia.
