Developing Hard Skills the Hard Way: Experiential Learning in Local Media

Members of our panel worked in local media groups across the country, where we each produced original content to be shared with a wide audience.

Despite working with the traditional media forms of radio and newspaper, our internships required us to adapt to unfamiliar technologies and teach ourselves new skills. Our panel will discuss the experience of growing these skills as well as how we improved our professional communication abilities, as we each spent time interacting with volunteers and community members. Each working with organizations in the cities we grew up in, our panel members were drawn to organizations with deep community ties and involvement, where we could understand and build connections with the people we worked with and served.
