Voices of XR: Towards Routine Multimodal Measurement of Brain Health and Performance

A person’s mental, physical and behavioural state is generally measured using one sensing modality at a time (e.g. fMRI, EEG, cardiac, etc.), providing a narrow window into the complex states spanning numerous bodily systems. Combining multiple sensing modalities can expand this window but necessitates complex synchronized data collection setups and specialized trained staff. The associated time, cost and complexity often limit such testing to clinical settings, and further restrict routine repeat use.
In this talk we will cover how the Evolve multimodal headset addresses these concerns by sensing brain activity, heart rhythm, eye movements, autonomic shifts and head motion in a single portable virtual reality (VR) device operable by non-specialized users. We will explore an assessment platform powered by this headset that provides a cohesive picture of how one's brain, mind and body work together across performance states, in various disorders, and before and after interventions. Finally, we will discover how it has been used to characterize shifts in states of consciousness and deliver an effective biofeedback intervention.
