This Grand Rounds session will provide an opportunity to engage in an interactive discussion of a complex clinical case from a community corrections setting. The case involves a client who was participating in a community corrections program following incarceration for stealing from customers at a restaurant and who presented with both gambling disorder and binge-eating disorder.
The social work therapist worked with the client weekly for approximately two years, addressing the intersection of childhood trauma, impulse control, behavioral patterns, and environmental and psychosocial factors. Clinical interventions included exploration of childhood trauma and the use of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) strategies to address impulses and behavioral patterns associated with both gambling and binge eating. Over the course of treatment, the client was able to completely discontinue gambling and significantly reduce binge-eating behaviors.
Students will have opportunities to consider their own clinical conceptualizations of the case, identify potential assessment and intervention strategies, discuss the therapeutic relationship and challenges of working within a community corrections context, and explore how they might approach various points in the client's treatment. Students will also have ample opportunity to ask questions about the case and engage in discussion.
