About the Speaker
Dr. Bernard Nahlen is Director of the Eck Institute for Global Health at the University of Notre Dame, where his career has focused on addressing diseases that disproportionately affect people in low- and middle-income countries. He is a family physician with a specialization in preventive medicine who began his career with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as an Epidemic Intelligence Officer assigned to the Malaria Branch, later serving as Deputy Director of the Los Angeles County AIDS Epidemiology Program.
In 1992, Dr. Nahlen arrived in Kenya, where he spent seven years as Director of the CDC field research station in collaboration with the Kenya Medical Research Institute, leading seminal studies on the health impact of insecticide-treated bed nets and the interactions between HIV and malaria among pregnant women and children. He went on to serve as Senior Technical Advisor to the WHO Global Malaria Programme, Senior Advisor at the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, and Deputy Coordinator of the U.S. President's Malaria Initiative from 2007 to 2017 before joining Notre Dame.
