We're please to welcome Dr. Adi Wiezel, Assistant Professor of Psychology at Elon University, as our first Psychology Colloquium speaker of the fall semester. Dr. Wiezel will present her talk: "Bridging Divides: The Psychology of Political Polarization."
Americans increasingly dislike and distrust people on the other side of the political divide—but are we as divided as we think we are? This interactive talk examines political polarization through the lens of social psychology, distinguishing between differences in political beliefs and the growing social and emotional divide between partisans. Drawing on research on social identity, stereotypes, intergroup conflict, and political misperceptions, the session explores why Democrats and Republicans often see one another as more different than they really are, how those perceptions shape relationships and civic life, and when polarization becomes particularly consequential. The talk will conclude by examining what psychological research suggests may—and may not—help bridge political divides.
All are welcome to attend.
