Certificate in College Teaching: Designing for Attention: Challenge, Power, and AI in College Teaching

AI can let students outsource the very struggle that learning requires. This session centers learning as an issue of attention. Attention is a limited, unevenly distributed resource we cultivate rather than assume. If learning lives in effortful, "desirably difficult" work, how do we design courses so students spend their attention there? And, through the lens, whose attention are we asking for, on whose terms, and when does "productive struggle" tip into "undesirable difficulty"? We'll look briefly at concrete design challenges at three levels (the course, the class session, and the assignment), and then draw on a range of your disciplines to trade strategies.
This is one of the elective workshops for the Certificate in College Teaching (CCT) Program. Those who miss more than ten minutes of a session will not receive CCT Program credit for that workshop.
