Every artifact has a story, and sometimes the story is so creepy, weird, or fascinating it becomes lore. Explore the history of some of the strangest and most bizarre objects in UNT Special Collections in The Legend of Eppy and Other Artifacts of Lore. This is one “lore drop” you won’t want to miss.

Like the apocalyptic paintings made by a Sunday school teacher in Denton to scare kids straight, or the tiny skull kept by a boy who loved his pet hamster, Mildred, so much he could never say goodbye. This exhibit explores the concept of lore through the artifacts we leave behind, like photographs of the infamous “Wyooter” cryptid, and a book so small it caused the typesetter to go blind.

No artifact in Special Collections has such an inspired lore as Eppy, an infamous former mascot that was lost, found, stolen and returned with a suspicious injury. Countless Reddit threads document student’s search for Eppy. Abandoned after his retirement in the mid-1990’s and relegated to a stairwell in the Union, students sought out and ultimately saved this creepy, but beloved, piece of history.

The exhibition will be on view from October 2 - 31.
