As AI-generated images, audio, and video become easier to create, deepfakes are increasingly appearing in impersonation scams, financial fraud, and misinformation. The presentation explains in plain language how deepfakes are created, why they can be convincing, and what people can do to protect themselves. It includes several real cases showing how AI-generated media has already been used to deceive victims and exploit their trust.
The session is designed for a blended audience of faculty, staff, and students. No technical or criminal justice background is required. It will share situations that members of a campus community may encounter, such as an urgent clone voice message that appears to come from a dean or chair, a fabricated screenshot or approval, or misleading content circulating online.
Presented by Dr. Raymond Hsieh, Professor of Digital Forensics and Criminal Justice at Pennsylvania West University.
