New York versus El Zapotito

Three characters gather around a lost place in the mountains. Everything happens in one night where reality is disrupted. The audience is taken through a loving story between a mother and her daughter, and their reencounter after many years. The daughter has returned from the United States to visit her hometown, after having finally obtained the sought-after residence permit, the ticket to achieving the “American Dream”. But the home she returns to is not what it once was. Instead she finds a ghost-town, where everyone has disappeared. Even the circus her mother used to own is gone, with only a few sad traces left behind. Nicanor, the ancient magician, helps her navigate this unfamiliar territory.

New York versus El Zapotito explores what it means to return home after a long journey, and what it means to be the one who stays. It guides us through painful encounters, revelatory flashbacks, and the raw tragic truth of reality. In short, it tells the story of migration and all of its facets - a story that rings profoundly true in the present-day.
