Creation and the Cosmic Egg in Hildegard's Painted Scivias and the Ordo Virtutum: Background Studies for Digital Presentation
Margot Fassler, Keough-Hesburgh Professor of Music History and Liturgy, Emeritus; Department of Theology, University of Notre Dame
Fassler is a historian of medieval music and the liturgy and a former president of the Medieval Academy of America. She has written many books and articles, most recently the monumental Cosmos, Liturgy and the Arts in the 12th Century: Hildegard’s Illuminated “Scivias.” Fassler's book explores the relationships between Hildegard's thought as a theologian and scientist and her practical work as a composer, poet, and liturgist, who also designed the paintings for the treatise. The show “Creation and Cosmos according to Hildegard of Bingen," is a companion piece that brings the ideas in the book to life.
This event is part of the Division of Arts & Humanities Fall 2026 Colloquium Series.
