John Anderson - Cornish Arts Incubator

Cornish Arts Incubator Residency facilitates risk-taking within visual and performing arts for Washington-based artists. The goal of this program is to support artists in the creation of new work. Artists are encouraged to collaborate with others and step outside the boundaries of a single genre or discipline, or outside the artist’s comfort zone. John P. Anderson is a muralist, studio artist, and percussionist. He has lived most of his life on the West Coast of North America, and is inspired by nature; especially the plants and animals that thrive both in the cities and the wildlands. He teaches visual art and music in the Seattle area, and his most memorable teaching experience was hosting open jam sessions at a community center in Tecate, Mexico. His studio work includes painting, mixed media sculpture, and building and modifying musical instruments. He often breaks the two-dimensional plane of his paintings, blurring the line between painting and sculpture. Self-awareness and material-awareness are important aspects of his work. He selects materials not only for their utilitarian and textural qualities, but for what they represent in our local, national, and global society. One of his primary art mediums is mural painting, and some of the murals he has designed and painted are at Shoreline Community College, Holy Family Bilingual Catholic School, Ballard High School, Lowell Elementary School, and Alki Elementary School. jpanders.com About the Project "Exploration of the idea of drums as both a visual and sonic art form. This could be drums and drum sets used as non-flat, non-rectangular painting surfaces and/or mixed media interactive sculptures, combine objects and/or instruments in a way that celebrates or questions the idea of the drum set as a single musical instrument, and include performance(s) and/or demonstration(s) by artists/musicians.
