Join us for our final Book Talk of the Threads of Democracy Project, where we will feature Dr. Andrea Freimuth's discussion of themes from Betsy Ross and the Making of America, by Marla R. Miller.
Revolutionary Women and the Making of America — Memory, Mythology and the Historical Archive
What do we know about Betsy Ross? Where did that knowledge come from? What is the difference between legend and history? How does that shape our understanding of women in the Revolutionary era?
Andrea Freimuth is an assistant professor of history at Bluffton University. She recently graduated with a Ph.D. in American Culture Studies from Bowling Green State University. Her work centers on the interpretation of early American history in modern memory, particularly the gendered representations in popular culture. To date, much of her research has focused on Abigail Adams.
