Please join us on November 3 at 4:00pm in the Max Kade Center for German-American Studies (1134 w. 11th st.) for a talk by Dr. László Borhi (Indiana University) titled "Cogwheels in a machine? Victims and Perpetrators in the Hungarian Holocaust."

The Hungarian Holocaust would not have taken place without the German invasion of Hungary in March 1944; the deportations could not have taken place without the enthusiastic support of the post invasion Hungarian government and bureaucracy. Talk will explore the tragic events of 1944 from the perspective of both the perpetrators and the victims on the basis archival documents and five thousand survival testimonies given immediately after the events.

László Borhi is Peter A. Kadas Chair Professor at the Department of Central Eurasian Studies at the Hamilton-Lugar School of Global and International Studies at Indiana University. He is the Doctor of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the highest attainable degree in Hungary, his prizes include the Gold Cross of Merit of the Republic of Hungary (2006). His publications include Hungary in the Cold War (CEU Press, 2004), Dealing with Dictators (Indiana University Press, 2016) and Survival under Dictatorships (CEU Press, 2025).

This talk is sponsored by the Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies, The Max Kade Center for German-American Studies, and the Department of Slavic, German, and Eurasian Studies.
