Philosophical painting discussion exploring art, light, nature, and experience through MOCA works.

What’s in a Painting? is a lecture and discussion-based course that approaches painting through a philosophical lens. In this two-hour, single-session class, participants examine contemporary works from MOCA Jacksonville’s permanent collection, paintings featured in MOCA Jacksonville’s The Armory South exhibition, and selected works spanning landscape, portraiture, still life, and abstraction. The course considers how to better understand paint through topics including light, nature, character, and experience.

Designed for art enthusiasts and painters of all skill levels, the course offers participants an opportunity to develop insights for art appreciation, explore strategies for communicating through visual media, and learn about different approaches to painting throughout recent history. The class is open to adults and teens.
