The First Stage Series at the University of North Texas offers senior students a distinctive opportunity to self-direct a theatrical production on campus. To participate, students must submit a proposal to a committee of faculty and staff and receive approval. These productions are entirely student-driven, encompassing all aspects from casting and rehearsals to the final direction of the show.

There will be two shows for the price of one! The first act will be, The Lesson, directed by Connor Clifton, followed by a 15-minute intermission and set change. The second act will be The Red House Monster, directed by Lexi Stavrou.

About The Lesson

In this darkly comic play, a cheerful and ambitious young student visits a respected professor in hopes of earning an advanced academic certificate. What begins as a simple lesson in mathematics and language gradually becomes more intense and unsettling, as the professor’s behavior shifts and his authority grows increasingly overpowering. As the session unfolds, the dynamic between teacher and pupil reveals a disturbing exploration of control, obedience, and the hidden dangers within systems of education and authority.

About The Red House Monster

Set on a remote Massachusetts island in the late 19th century, this mysterious play follows Hannah Gold, a young woman whose life is forever altered by a single, unforgettable night. Blending eerie folklore with whispers of the supernatural, the story weaves together haunted spaces, lingering spirits, strange creatures, and unsettling secrets. At its center lies the enigmatic Red House, a place full of unanswered questions and hidden dangers, leaving audiences to wonder not only what is inside, but who can truly be trusted. Drawing inspiration from classical mythology and gothic literature, the play creates an atmosphere of suspense and intrigue that keeps viewers guessing until the very end.
