Dialogues: The Islamic World and Chinese Art

Join Denise Patry Leidy, the Ruth and Bruce Dayton Curator of Asian Art, for a Gallery Talk highlighting three objects that reveal the nuanced responses to Chinese imagery and materials sometimes found in Islamic art. The painting of flowers and birds, which flourished in Iran in the mid-17th century, reflects the introduction of this Chinese theme to the Islamic world via long-standing trade and diplomatic exchanges. To further demonstrate the multifaceted visual dialogues between these cultures, Leidy considers the use of lacquer as a painting medium, along with two ceramics in the collection of the Yale University Art Gallery. Gallery Talks is a weekly series led by Gallery staff and guest speakers on Wednesdays at midday.
