If you are curious about Arabic or interested in studying it, I will be hosting a weekly study group aimed at introducing beginning students to the language.
We will begin with the alphabet and then use the Al-Kitaab textbook series to understand the basic grammar of Arabic. The group will function more like a tutoring session than a formal class, and we can devote time to whatever specific aspects of literature/politics/philosophy/history/poetry speak to the members of our group.
In addition to studying the Arabic language, this group's discussions will complement the Islamic philosophy reading group's project this semester of reading the Qur'an.
I am not an expert in Arabic, and hope to create a low-stakes environment of mutual learning and exploration. I would also be glad to talk about college and post-grad State Department funding/fellowships for studying language, as someone who participated in one of their scholarships.
Please stop by if you are interested. We will meet from 4-5 p.m. on Sundays in the Cohen Study Room in the library.
