AI can let students outsource the very struggle that learning requires. In this seminar, we’ll reframe it as a question of attention, a limited resource we cultivate rather than assume. If learning lives in effortful, "desirably difficult" work, how do we design so students spend their attention there? We'll look briefly at concrete moves at three levels — the course, the class session, and the assignment — then spend most of our time discussing experiences and strategies for keeping productive struggle intact. Consider coming with a course, class, or assignment you'd like to rethink.
