Seattle University’s annual Mass of the Holy Spirit will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 1, at Immaculate Conception Church (820 18th Ave., at 18th Ave. and E. Marion St.).
Students, faculty, and staff of all faith backgrounds are encouraged to attend!
A longstanding tradition at Catholic universities around the world, the Mass of the Holy Spirit is an opportunity to ask the Spirit of God to bless us as we start a new year of learning and discovery. St. Ignatius and the founders of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) celebrated the Mass at their first school in Messina, Sicily in 1548. Since that time the Mass has been celebrated in countless countries, hundreds of languages spanning multiple centuries. Classes are canceled from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. so that all may participate. Some additional details:
Robing and Procession: Faculty and staff are invited to robe and join the academic procession. The church basement will open for robing at 9:30 a.m.; please be ready to form the faculty and staff procession at 10:15 a.m. Please do not leave valuables or money in the robing area during Mass.Transportation:Beginning at 9:00 a.m., one shuttle will depart from the South Lake Union Campus near Cornish Commons, at the intersection of Lenora Street and Terry Avenue, and travel directly to Immaculate Conception Church. A second trip will be added if more passengers arrive than can be accommodated in the van. Also beginning at 9:30 a.m., a shuttle will depart from the Bellarmine Turnaround on the First Hill Campus (12th Avenue and Columbia Street) for Immaculate Conception Church. After dropping off South Lake Union passengers, that shuttle will also assist with transportation from First Hill to the church.Return shuttles to both campuses will be available on 18th Avenue near the front entrance of the church following Mass. Please note that return transportation to South Lake Union will likely consist of one trip.After-Mass Celebration: Immediately following Mass, students, faculty, and staff will process down Marion Street and back to campus for light refreshments on the plaza in front of the Sinegal Center for Science and Innovation.
